LEDs have seemingly found their way into every corner of the realm of contractor equipment. They are on drills, saws, and a host of other power tools and layout tools. However, the illuminating little diodes remained elusive when it came to an almost glaringly obvious candidate in need of illumination-the standard level. Enter Sawnson Tool Co.'s Lightening Level™. At some point, every contractor has struggled to focus on his or her level's vials to determine level or plumb. Trapped under a staircase, in a closet, basement or other poorly lit location, we've all tried to juggle a flashlight and the level in a desperate attempt to gain an accurate reading.

Now, Swanson has given us the ability to obtain that reading-quite clearly-and lose the flashlight in the process. The Lightening Level™ line from Swanson includes four models-a 24" and a 48" model, equipped with or without a magnetic edge. All models incorporate all of the professional features you would expect from a quality level like box beam construction with impact protection on either end, accurate vials and bright LEDs built right into acrylic blocks. The lights are designed into the levels from the get go-nothing is an afterthought with these units. For power, the level requires two AAA batteries, which are included. The batteries drop into a solid compartment with a screw down cover. The three vials are activated with one click of the switch. Should you forget to switch off after garnering an accurate reading with the level, don't worry-the unit will shut itself off after 10 minutes. Neat.

The light produced by the LEDs are more than adequate to get an accurate reading. We really appreciated the attention to detail with the level's construction. The level we tested was a 48" model, perfect for determining pitch for drainage applications. For drains traversing the darkest basements, the Lightening Level is just what the plumber ordered. We were able to quickly determine proper pitch for a drain line-despite the absence of our flashlights. The vials have enhanced three-ring center lines which are clearly illuminated by the LEDs. The level's face has square and v groove channels for alignment on either square corners or on pipes. Far from cosmetic add-ons, these features were much appreciated.

In short, this rugged level is a winner. With accurate vials, a light-weight box beam construction and LED lighting that is the premier illumination system for any level we've tested, the Lightening Level™ will leave you beaming.
